The short answer
The main SMS apps for Shopify are Amy, Postscript, Attentive, Klaviyo, Omnisend and Shopify Messaging. Postscript and Attentive are texting-first. Klaviyo and Omnisend add texting to email. Shopify Messaging texts from a toll-free number that can’t take replies. Amy runs email and SMS together, writes the texts for you, and charges $0.009 a segment with no commitment and no separate carrier fees. Whichever you pick, marketing texts need the shopper’s written consent and a carrier-verified sending number.

What to look for in a Shopify SMS app
- How texts are counted. Carriers bill in 160-character segments, and one emoji drops a segment to 70 characters. Check whether an app bills per text or per segment, and whether carrier fees come on top.
- Commitments. Some apps sell texting as a monthly spend you commit to up front. Pay-as-you-go means you never pay for texts you didn’t send.
- The sending number. US marketing texts must come from a carrier-verified number: a verified toll-free number or a registered 10DLC number. Ask who sets it up, what it costs, and whether shoppers can reply.
- Quiet hours and STOP. The app should hold texts outside reasonable hours and honor STOP replies instantly.
- Email in the same app, so one shopper doesn’t get a text and an email from two different tools within the same hour.
The apps
1. Amy
- Best for
- Stores that want email and texting run together and written for them. Each automation starts switched off. All 12 can send texts too, and texting stays off for each one until you turn it on. Campaigns always need your approval. Amy holds marketing texts outside quiet hours and sends them at the next opening.
- How it charges
- $0.009 per 160-character segment, billed only when you text, with no separate carrier fees and nothing to pre-commit. The $10 a month includes your sending number and 2,000 emails.
- Know before you switch
- Texting starts once carriers verify your sending number, which can take a little while. Email can start before that.
2. Postscript
- Best for
- Shopify brands that lead with texting. SMS and MMS, with RCS in early access, quiet hours, campaign A/B tests and an AI shopping assistant called Shopper.
- How it charges
- A monthly platform fee plus per-message rates, plus carrier fees passed through at cost. No fees for incoming messages and no contracts. Postscript’s pricing.
- Know before you switch
- Email is still rolling out by waitlist, so you may need a separate email tool.
3. Attentive
- Best for
- Mid-market and enterprise brands. SMS, MMS, RCS, email and push, with A/B tests, quiet hours and AI products.
- How it charges
- Quoted, based on volume, list size, channels and AI products. It bills each message sent and each subscriber response, with discounts for a committed minimum spend. Attentive’s pricing.
- Know before you switch
- No public price list, so expect a sales conversation.
4. Klaviyo SMS
- Best for
- Stores already on Klaviyo email that want texting in the same tool.
- How it charges
- A monthly spend commitment: $15 a month for 1,000 US toll-free sends, $70 for 5,000, $125 for 10,000 and $240 for 20,000 at list price, plus carrier fees, read August 30, 2026. Klaviyo SMS pricing.
- Know before you switch
- You commit to a monthly amount whether or not you send it.
5. Omnisend SMS
- Best for
- Stores on Omnisend’s Pro plan that want texting beside email and push.
- How it charges
- Since May 4, 2026, SMS for new subscribers is an add-on on the Pro plan only, billed per 160-character segment at volume-based rates. Omnisend’s SMS terms.
- Know before you switch
- The Standard plan has no SMS for new subscribers.
6. Shopify Messaging
- Best for
- Simple texts without another app. SMS arrived in December 2025 and SMS automations in May 2026.
- How it charges
- See Shopify’s Messaging help pages for current rates. In the US it texts from a registered toll-free number.
- Know before you switch
- That number can’t receive replies, so shoppers can’t text you back.
How to set up SMS marketing on Shopify
- Collect consent the right way. US law requires a shopper’s prior express written consent before you send marketing texts. A signup popup or checkbox with clear disclosure language does this.
- Get a verified sending number. Carriers have to verify a toll-free number or register a 10DLC number before marketing texts will deliver.
- Turn on the automations that earn the most. A welcome text with the signup offer, an abandoned cart reminder and a shipping update are the usual first three.
- Keep it rare. Text less often than you email, and keep each one short enough to fit one segment.
On Amy, the popup collects texting consent with the disclosure, the sending number is part of the $10, and every automation’s text is written for you and off until you turn it on.
Facts about each tool come from its own website and help center, gathered in October 2026: Postscript, Attentive, Klaviyo (prices read August 30, 2026), Omnisend and Shopify. Prices change, so check each tool’s page before you decide.
